Frequently Asked Questions

Bone age is a measure of the biological age of an individual. It is calculated by determining the degree of maturation of the bones. Bone age determination allows children's growth potential to be evaluated by considering skeletal maturation rather than their chronologic age.

Bone age is measured by radiologic examination of hand-wrist X-rays. The Greulich-Pyle Atlas used for this purpose consists of standard hand-wrist bone images suitable for chronological age groups. The left wrist x-ray of the individual is compared with the standard pictures according to age in the atlas. Radiology physicians make the evaluation.

Bone age decision support system is a system that uses artificial intelligence algorithms to determine bone age and gives an estimated bone age.

  • Very high accuracy compared to traditional methods (margin of error is 3.5 months in children and 2 years in adults)
  • First bone age estimation method in adults from wrist radiographs for forensic medicine and anthropology
  • Bone age assessment in seconds
  • Support to radiology, orthopedics, pediatrics and forensic physicians in their decision-making processes
  • Ease in child development follow-up in hospitals without a radiology physician
  • Low radiation dose compared to traditional methods
  • Time and space independent assessment
  • Decision support system suitable for our country (The data set must be up-to-date and include all geographical regions of our country)
  • The Greulich-Pyle atlas was developed between 1931 and 1940 based on X-rays of approximately 1000 white, middle, and upper socioeconomic level children in Ohio, USA. It is outdated. The Gok atlas used in our country is adapted from the G-P atlas.
  • In bone age determination, not only left wrist but also elbow, shoulder, lung and pelvis X-rays may be required and the radiation dose increases.
  • A specialized physician is required for bone age determination.
  • The total duration of the procedure is longer.

Bone age is used to monitor growth and development in children.

- - - Criminal capacity of children is classified in three groupsin most of the countries.

  • Criminal Capacity of Children under the Age of Twelve (12),
  • Criminal Capacity of 12-15 Year Olds,
  • Criminal Capacity of 15-18 Year Olds.

In addition, it can be determined by bone age whether the individual who commits a crime is an adult and whether he/she has passed the age of 18.

It can be used in age determination cases in adults.
